Introducing the Recipients of the Vitiligo Innovators Program!

Yan Valle is an internationally recognized vitiligo advocate and the founder of the Vitiligo Research Foundation (VRF), a global nonprofit dedicated to advancing vitiligo awareness, research and patient empowerment. Through his work, Yan has played a central role in uniting patients, clinicians, researchers and advocacy organizations worldwide to elevate vitiligo as both a medical and social priority. He is also a driving force behind World Vitiligo Day, helping grow the initiative into one of the most visible global platforms for vitiligo education and engagement. Through the Vitiligo Research Foundation and World Vitiligo Day, Yan has led large scale, international initiatives focused on reducing stigma, expanding access to education, and fostering collaboration across the vitiligo community. His leadership has helped mobilize patients, families, clinicians and partners across digital and in person platforms to drive awareness, connection and empowerment worldwide. Yan’s sustained commitment to advocacy and global community building continues to make a meaningful impact on the lives of people affected by vitiligo.

John E. Harris, MD, PhD, is Chair of Dermatology at Mass General Brigham and Professor of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School. He is a dermatologist and physician-scientist whose research focuses on understanding the mechanisms of autoimmune skin diseases and translating these discoveries into new therapies for patients. Dr. Harris leads a research program that integrates basic, translational and clinical investigation to identify disease pathways, biomarkers and therapeutic targets. His laboratory helped establish the central role of interferon-γ signaling in vitiligo, contributing to the development of the first FDA-approved treatment that restores pigmentation in patients with the disease. His group subsequently identified IL-15 signaling as a key driver of disease persistence and demonstrated that targeting this pathway can produce durable disease reversal, providing the foundation for the development of novel therapeutic approaches currently being evaluated in clinical studies. Dr. Harris has authored more than 200 scientific publications and has received numerous honors for his contributions to translational medicine, including the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the American Academy of Dermatology’s Marion B. Salzberger Award and election to the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI). His long-term goal is to develop safer, more effective and ultimately curative therapies for patients with autoimmune and inflammatory skin diseases.

Dr. Tissera is a recent graduate of Duke University School of Medicine and a current preliminary year intern at Massachusetts General Hospital. Kristin has made meaningful contributions to the vitiligo community through research, advocacy and education. She has conducted extensive academic research on vitiligo, including an award winning undergraduate thesis, a Fulbright Research Scholarship studying pigmentation biology and peer reviewed publications exploring pediatric vitiligo comorbidities. Beyond research, Dr. Tissera has worked closely with the patient advocacy community as a longtime volunteer and leader with VITFriends, where she has helped develop inclusive educational programs and hosts the Vitiligo Medical podcast to make accurate, accessible information available to patients and families.
